Insomnia?

Heidi :D asked:

Okay well, I think I might have insomnia problems? I am 14 female, I usually can’t fall asleep for around 4-5 hours even if I am tired and the room is silent. Also, I NEVER feel refreshed after sleeping (even if it’s for over 8 hours). I often have other problems too like OCD and I have many fears/phobias which also keep me awake. I do have some stress and lately have been feeling kind of depressed.

Please help!

Sometimes when you go to bed after watching tv or you have something on ur mind, ur thoughts race and that makes it difficult for you 2 sleep. OCD is obsessive compulsive disordes, which makes you do thingds in patterns, repetitiveness. You may want to consider going to see a doctor or talk to someone! =]

Try alcohol. Have a few drinks and take a hot shower before bed. Usually, that should make a difference. I’d try that if I were you.

I’m not sure, but I wouldn’t start taking sleeping pills becuase they could lead to addiction, and you don’t want that at fourteen.

I don’t know if it’s avalible to you, but if you have a place near you that teaches pilates or yoga classes I would consider taking them, with friends even. I know people say they are reaxing all the time, but it’s true. I’m fourteen and two of my best friends and I take pilates and it’s a lot of fun.

I have some of the same problems.

    (:

    Insomnia sucks.
    I used to have it.
Main things are lifestyle changes. First off, never do anything in your bed except for sleeping. Then your brain associates your bed with sleeping, instead of reading, doing homework, watching TV, you know. Second, an hour before you go to bed, turn of the music, the computer, the phone, and maybe even the TV, or just anything that keeps your mind going. Your mind will shut down, then you can go to bed when your mind is shut down.

And about waking up feeling not refreshed, it’s because you’re getting up too early. Even if you go to bed at 8, and you get up at 4 AM(getting 8 hours of sleep), your body won’t like it. Because of your Circadian Rhythm, at 4 AM, you are still asleep to your body. I’m sure you don’t get up at 4, but if you get up at 6 AM, you are still getting up too early, and I know that sometimes it’s unavoidable. But try to make allowances to allow yourself to get up later. Skip a shower in the morning, instead take one before you go to bed. If you HAVE to have one, shorten it. Also, lay out all of your clothes before you go bed.
Also, just relax. Sleeping is fun.
    I hope I helped. :)

I had the same problem for years & what worked for me is audio-books…music never worked because I would still lay there & think, but with the audio-book *quietly* playing I can just barely listen & I end up falling to sleep rather quickly. I’m sure any book you’re interested in would be fine but I usually use any non-fiction subject that I would like to learn or know & then hope I absorb the info while I sleep (which doesn’t seem to work…since i still can’t speak Spanish). Since most audio-books are on multiple cds, I usually transfer them to my laptop & use the laptop to play them. I turn on the auto-repeat so it will play over & over then when I wake up in the morning it’s still playing & I will listen for a little while. Since you’re depressed it might be good to get a positive thinking or motivational book to use. When I was trying to lose weight, I played “You, On A Diet” while I slept. It’s a good book but kinda boring, so it was perfect. Even if you think it won’t work, try it….I just tried it on a whim & it worked like a charm. To this day I usually go to bed with an audio-book playing. Mother’s read their children to sleep all the time…& believe me, a good story still works! Good luck & sweet dreams!

try seeing the doctor for some sleeping tabs afterwhich you try to initiate the sleep naturally by relaxing. As an addendum, take a cold shower and let the environment be a bit cold (using either an ac or a fan) then take very cold and concentrated milk and go to bed. Most importantly, RELAX.
