Insomnia can be classified into 3 main groups.

Inability to sleep. The individual is unable to sleep. However, he is able to fall asleep, he will have a deep and relaxing rest.

Inability to get deep sleep. The individual can fall asleep easily, but he is unable to get deep relaxing sleep.

Wakes up too early in the morning, after which, he is not able to get back to sleep

Insomnia General Information. Typically, insomnia will not last longer than two weeks. However if the individual suffers from this sleeping disorder for six month or more, he can be said to be suffering from chronic insomnia.

By having insufficient sleep over a long period of time, it can have drastic effect on the individual. Both his physical and mental health will be affected, which increases the amount of mood swings he gets and indirectly strains his social relationship with others.

On top of this, he will commonly be suffering other mental related diseases such as depression and anxiety.

When an event that carries along sever consequences happened to an individual, insomnia can occur. Some common examples will be the death of a loved one and money issues.

By having constant thoughts about the event which happened, brain activities increase. The increased brain activities make it difficult for the sufferer to rest.

Interesting History of Insomnia Insomnia is not a modern disease and the starting date was unknown.

Insomnia is in fact an advantage to some people. Famous people make full use of their alertness at night to their advantages. And others invented special methods to try to solve their insomnia problems.

Charles Dickens and Winston Churchill push the blame to their beds whenever they are unable to sleep.

To solve his insomnia problem, Winston Churchill often change the bed he sleeps on.

Only by sleeping in a specific position, Charles Dickens will then be only be able to fall asleep. The bed will have to head north and he will have to be sleeping exactly in the middle to have a blissful sleep.

For Benjamin Franklin, the bed would had to be cold enough for him to sleep. If the bed was too warm, he would get off his bed to allow air to cool it before trying to get into dreamland again.

For Napoleon Bonaparte, he made full use of his insomnia to plan his strategies.

There are many myths about sleep. Let’s take a step back and bring 3 important facts about sleep health to your attention.

1. Snoring can be fatal.

If you snore loudly, with choking sounds intermixed, you may suffer from sleep apnea. Many sufferers do not know that they in fact have sleep apnea - it’s often their partners who identify their choking and loud snoring. Identification is as simple as a sleep study in which a doctor will monitor your blood oxygen levels over the course of the evening. For those who suffer, day time drowsiness are a usual identifying mark. If you feel that you meet the criteria outlined above, please check with a physician - corrective surgery, a mechanical device called a CPAP, or other forms of therapy may be warranted.

2. A lack of sleep can cause obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and depression

In a world that never sleeps, it’s no surprise that a number of our leading diseases are due to lack of rest. Insufficient sleep decreases the amount of growth hormone we produce, increasing the chance for weight gain. Blood pressure normally falls during sleep, but regular interruptions can keep it elevated, leading to hypertension and cardiovascular problems. A lack of sleep decreases the body’s ability to use insulin, which can lead to diabetes. Overeating is a common side effect of sleep deprivation, as the body’s lack of insulin production results in increased appetite to produce more energy to sustain the body during deprivation.

3. Insomnia causes more than the inability to sleep

The inability to fall sleep isn’t the only condition of insomnia. Many people forget that just as important as duration of sleep is sleep quality. The other three signs are: frequent waking, waking prematurely, and chronic fatigue despite an adequate amount of sleep. If insomnia symptoms occur more than a few times a week, please consult with your doctor.

Signs of Insomnia How do you know if you are having insomnia? When you are tossing and turning in your bed continuously and waiting for morning to arrive, I do not have to tell you that those are signs of insomnia.

5 Helpful Tips for Insomnia Clear your mind and do not worry about anything. By early evening or 4 hours before you sleep, do not worry about a single thing.

If stray thoughts start to appear in your mind, divert those thoughts by looking at other physical stuffs such as your ceiling. Look for cracks on it and decide the next color your wish to paint your ceiling with. Such mundane stuff will dull your senses and allow you to fall asleep easier.

One more way to cure insomnia is to listen to music. Listen to those without any vocals with soothing music. This way, your mind will be hypnotized by the music and you will have a easier rest.

The third method will be to take a warm bath a couple of hours before sleeping. You do not have to clean yourself thoroughly, just allow the warm water to drip onto you.

By moving your hands all over your body to clean yourself will increase brain activities. If possible, soak yourself in the bath tub and close your eyes with the soothing music in the background.

Drink a small cup of lavender or camomile tea before landing in bed. They are good for inducing the sleepy feeling in you.

Alternatively drink warm milk as a replacement for tea. Drinking suitable beverages will allow you to have better sleep.

Another useful tip for insomnia is to having a gentle back massage. If you are married, get your spouse to do a back massage for you. However, do not discuss any issues and if possible keep the conversation close to zero.

Play music in the background and keep conversation to the minimum. Conversations, especially those related to your problems, will only increase your alertness.

A last final advice is to maintain a regular bedtime routine. If you are used to sleeping at 4am in the morning, there is no way for you to sleep at 10pm at night. Slowly tune and sleep an hour earlier each day and you will find that it is a breeze to sleep at 10pm!

A somber look at how prescription drugs are affecting us, in particular the dangerous class of drugs called benzodiazepines. Heath Ledger was reportedly taking Xanax and Valium which are both benzodiazepines and Ambien, a Z-drug, which has similar affects to benzodiazepines. Is it possible these pills could have inflamed his insomnia and anxiety? When symptoms are not relieved or become worse, a patient can often become poly-drugged.

For more information visit http://www.benzo.org.uk. There are many support forums for those of you trying to withdraw from benzodiazepines and Z-drugs (Ambien, Sonata, Lunesta). These include http://www.benzoisland.org and the Yahoo Health Group: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/benzo/.

We are currently working on a documentary film about the dangers of benzodiazepines. We are seeking personal stories from people who have suffered from the use of doctor prescribed benzodiazepines. If you have a story to tell we would like to hear it.

“Insomniac” author Gayle Greene discusses the many negative mental and physiological effects of sleep deprivation.

—–

Gayle Greene discusses her book Insomniac.

Part memoir, part scientific reportage and analysis, a book for all of us who wish to know more about sleep, the condition which consumes one third of our lives. Greene - a member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the patient representative on the board of the American Insomnia Association - addresses head on the neglect of this disorder that affects millions.

Herself an insomniac, she weaves together the story of her personal journey through a lifetime of sleepless nights; the experiences of other insomniacs; an in-depth study of sleep science and current research; and a detailed examination of what can be done to help those afflicted. You might call her work, as she notes, “a field guide to insomnia”.

Billy Collins writes, “The good news is that Greene’s book is all you ever need to read on the subject.” Green is a professor of literature and women’s studies at Scripps College - Cody’s Books

Gayle Green has published dozens of articles in scholarly journals such as Signs, Contemporary Literature, and Renaissance Drama, many of which have been reprinted in anthologies (e.g., Blackwell¹s Shakespeare: An Anthology of Criticism and Theory, 1945-2000,2004). She’s also published in more popular venues such as Ms Magazine, The Nation, The Women’s Review of Books, and In These Times.
She’s a member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, a professional medical society for researchers and clinicians, and a board member and the patient representative of the American Insomnia Association, an organization within the American Academic of Sleep Medicine.
