Rising at the same time everyday and no napping helps me. Also enough fresh air , sunshine and exercise. I have a routine too, hot bath an hour before bedtime and read for about a half hour or until I drop the book and zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I’ve had trouble going to sleep all of my life ( staying asleep isn’t a problem)

A few months ago, I told a co-worker… "Im so tired of talking to customers with that slack- jawed open mouthed DUH look" I told her
"Try it, you brain absolutely cannot think with your jaw hanging loose like that "
So one night, when I was trying to go to sleep… I tried it. I fell right asleep. Now I do it all the time..and fall off almost immediately.
I think way too much and its hard to turn off my mind. This is a great discovery. Acting stupid LOL

I believe there is a book about to be published on this very subject, actually a scientific study. Having had a preview seems that negative thinking is a big problem, I do a lot of that. If you are not asleep within half and hour get back up and do something until you do feel tired.
I am trying all of these. Will certainly try the one suggested on here, so don’t drop by tonight.

Autumn has my remedy, a good soak with a toddy is always good for the soul.
I find a good brisk walk or some sort of exercise earlier in the day is also a big help.
There are tapes out there that show you how to relax your body. I have found that most helpful too,

I think I have tried everything to get me to sleep, I even took prescription meds. for a long time, they worked but left me groggy the next day, Now I take an over the counter drug that helps me and I don’t feel groggy the next morning. You should ask your doctor. Many people need something to help them sleep. Poppy

You said without medications & I take that to mean doctor prescribed sleep aids. I take two "time released" Tylenol PM capsules about thirty minutes before bedtime. It is not addicting, helps me sleep well, especially if I have a pain issue. The time released capsules work faster than the tablets. I wake up in the morning, feeling well rested.

What helps me is spending a day in the garden in the summer, I have been working in the garden
to-day up till 2 hours ago.
In the winter, plenty of house work makes me tired enough to sleep.

In my 70+ years, I don’t remember ever having a problem with insomnia. If I don’t fall asleep within 3 or so minutes, I start silently counting backward from 100. I try to see how far back I can count before I change ‘90-89-88′, to ‘90-91-92′, etc. When I start doing this I know I’m just about asleep.

Short Stuff and I must have a lot in common because I also take Tylenol PM before bed time. I could add nothing of value to the Old Farts remedy for insomnia though.

    This sounds crazy,
    but if you try
    it you will see.
    At some
    point during your day
    take a short walk and
    breath deeply.

    Force yourself.

    Make it a "have to"
    in your
    daily regime.

    It does something to your
    metabolism. Don’t know what.

At night about a half hour
    before bedtime you could take
a ‘melatonin’ tablet - which is
    a natural substance that not
only aids in sleep but makes
you more ‘with it’ in the day
    time. Alert.

I don’t know if you consider this a medication but magnesium really helped me. 200 to 500 mg a few hours before bedtime. Start with the smallest dose and work up until you find one that works.

I have had the same problem in the past until I heard someone on TV saying that we shouldn’t watch TV or get on the computer just before bedtime-something to do with blue light-I read the hour before bed instead. Also a very dark room helps me-so good luck.

There is something in lettuce that induces sleep, so a lettuce sandwich with a lot of lettuce on may do the trick. You could also make a small pillow filled with dried hops and dried Lavender in. I have heard that this works too.

Make love at bedtime, drink a glass of warm milk, have a bath or shower last thing at night, spray your pillow with lavender, open the window, sleep in a cool room.

Any or all of the above.
