Trazodone

Trazodone is a psychiatrists medication its great for depression and insomnia instead of a benzodiazepines like xanax or valium or z drugs like ambien… often prescribed by non psychiatrists which contributes to depression. Trazodone takes 90 minutes usually to kick in so if go to bed at 11:00pm I tell my patients to take it at 9:30 pm. Listen to this updated vid on trazodone. Its often misunderstood in general medical practice and patient’s conceptions of it vary widely. It’s ok to ask your pdoc for this!

I miss the …
I miss the crazy-vivid dreams from Remeron but the weight gain sucked! I forgot about Trazadone, think it’s a good mix for sleep along with bupropion sr 150×2? I was also on trazadone for a while but switched to zolpidem, dunno why but it was a BAD idea, I’m one of those sleep drivers/walkers on that crud, I threw them away.

I had terrible, …
I had terrible, terrible anxiety when I was taking that stuff — to the point where, after taking 50-100 mg prior to sleeping — I would wake up in the morning and have so much anxiety that I would need another 25-50mg just to calm me down, and more throughout the day. I felt that I had become physically dependant on the stuff, and had to taper off after only being on it a week. Weird, eh?

I get the penis …
I get the penis problem on this stuff, and I’ve always hated hearing people sing its praises. I was very lucky I got away with not having to do the emergency-room-in the-middle-of-the-night riff. A higher dose and I’d have been in trouble. I’d rather stay awake all night.

This is really …
This is really effective and I use it sparingly… I only ask for about 45 per year from my doctor and he is happy to fill it because it’s not Ambien or any of the harder core sleep stuff. I’d recommend it but I have several family members that it seems to have an opposite effect upon - it keeps my Mother awake, for instance.
Interesting how different bodies react to/process same medications differently.
