I suffer from insomnia and have been fore the past few years. I just started on this medication that was prescribed and it helps but I don't want to be dependant on it. I have anxiety problems and I stress alot. The doctor tells me I can't take my stress to sleep with me. What are some ways besides the medicine of getting to sleep that would help? food? anything?
Well I do hobbies.. they contribute to my insomnia. Like the computer, TV, webdesign. That all just keeps me up.

I've also had this problem, and the best approach to insomnia is exercises, and the more the better. Also drink chamomile tea before bed, it works at least somewhat to relax you. What works great for me with anxiety is distraction. Constantly be doing something and disctract your mind of stressful thoughts. So google insomnia and excercise for more reading. And go on a jog and do stuff now!

    well it comes down to what you like to do.

    pick up some hobbies…
    music
    drawing
    writing (that can get a bit depressing)
    DONT EAT
    reading
    movies! theyre great

    they are stress relievers but unfortunately i find they contribute to my insomnia…

    Hard physical work. Wash some walls, scrub floors or dig up a flower bed. Also help to get involved in helping someone else who can't do it themselves.

    self-hypnosis works for me:
    lie down on your back with your arms at your side, and recognize the tension in your body. Start by clenching your toes, imagining all the tension balled up in them, count to three, and then release all the tension from your toes as you feel them become heavy. Continue with your calves and toes, then thighs calves and toes, then hips, stomach, chest, hands, arms shoulders face head until at the end you are flexing every muscle in your body and when you let go, feel the tension leave you as you become heavy. Do not move. Inhale to the count of ten, and repeat a simple phrase to yourself like "Let Go" as you breath out, or imagine yourself walking down stairs, counting each one, as you breath out.

    This works for me. you might want to buy a self-hypnosis book to get it explained better. Hope you get some good rest soon!

    I know this isn't the same answer as everyone else, but sometimes plain old hobbies don't help insomniacs. I know this because I am one. I think you are preventing yourself from sleeping. I think that is possible. Try melatonin, it is totally natural ( i suggest to look it up). Our brains naturally release it as we're about to go to sleep. I do not suggest taking prescriptions at all.
    Try taking a warm/hot shower or bath before you go to bed. Also avoid television or a computer screen before you go to sleep, these things keep your brain awake.

    I've had insomnia since I was 16. My sleep clock is broken. I am now 56. You can read my insomnia story at http://www.fms-help.com/insomnia.htm I also have a list of things I tried for sleep since 1982, and how they worked for me, at http://www.fms-help.com/sleep.htm There are meds and supplements that can help people like us. I have tried many things, as you can imagine, in the past 40 years to get a decent night's sleep. Without restorative sleep, your immune system gets stressed. You may need an anti-anxiety med and/or a sleep med. They work differently for different people, so you will have to experiment. Hopefully your doctor will be flexible in letting you try things until you find something that works. There are also OTC products that you can try.
