Archive for natural sleep remedies

Ok so i have a really hard time falling asleep i DEFINITELY don’t want to use drugs or anything and I am pretty young….. so i was just wondering if anyone had a good natural/homemade sleep remedy. Please help! And thanks in advance!!
Ha ha thx! i dont really like warm mild though…… and i am reading a REALLY good book…… and i loveee reading sooooo……… wow i am just messing myself up……… but really thanks!

drink warm milk or eat a few slices of thin sliced turkey. Starting at your toes, contract all the your muscles in your body and hold for 5 seconds and then release and relax, then do your ankles, calves and keep moving up your body. read a very involved complicated boring book. I am going to sleep just thinking about this stuff. G.L.

I tried warming up milk but it ended up turning plastic on top….don’t think it worked either…
…I have work tomorrow…

Melatonin is a hormone that’s created by your body every night and is what causes you to be able to drift into a peaceful nights sleep. If your body doesn’t product enough melatonin each night before you go to bed it can cause you to have trouble falling asleep or you can experience disturbed sleep where you are constantly waking up in the middle of the night. Alcohol, caffeine, or exposure to too much light can cause your body to not create enough melatonin, as it is produced in response to darkness. So the way that this natural sleeping aid works is quite simple. It gives your body the melatonin that your body is currently lacking, so that you feel sleepy and can easily fall asleep again.

Standardized Valerian extract is a safe and non addictive sedative which works by calming the mind and body. It has been used for centuries and again is widely used. Valerian is available at most pharmacies and is a natural remedy to aid sleep. Taken before bedtime it can ease nerves and calm the mind to help you drift off to sleep. Lemon balm and Hops, are also soothing remedies which can calm and relax the mind and body.

try and google guided meditation and see if you can get something online to listen to for tonight……. meditation will help relieve the madness of insomnia rapidly……. soothes the frazzled nervous system and affords the utter joy of blissing out and thinking about nothing at all…… and just being.

any good health food store will be able to provide you with a guided meditation cd.

peace baby

I’m prescribed lunesta, but i don’t take it because it leaves a terrible taste in my mouth all day the next day. What are some better ways to help me sleep at night? I usually just end up staying up for 2 or three nights straight and then i sleep really good that next night. but i wish i could actually sleep good every night. I hate taking medicine though. so anybody know any natural remedies. I do drink coffee but only in the morning. You don’t think i should give up coffee do you?

I tried lunesta too. It did not work very well as a sleep aid, and I agree about the terrible taste. Many people should not drink coffee after 3 PM. It’s unlikely you should give up your morning coffee unless you are hypersensitive to caffeine.

Below is a long list I once wrote about ways to fall asleep. The list is so long that reading it might put you to sleep :-) This list is the one that Tony I copied and pasted from me without my permission.

If nothing below works, email me and I can give you some suggestions about over the counter and prescription meds, if necessary. However, the natural remedies below are safer and free of side effects.

What helped me a lot to fall asleep, especially when my mind was racing, was to lie in bed and listen to relaxation CDs, especially those that contain someone speaking with relaxing music in the background. The combination of voice and music is very soothing. Many of these CDs are available on eBay for very low prices.

A warm bath is a great way to help you to sleep (depending on the season). If you can’t take a bath, you can give yourself a foot massage with slightly warm massage oil, sesame oil, or castor oil from a health food store.

A helpful technique is to relax your body one part at a time. So you could relax your feet, your lower legs, upper legs, moving up from your lower belly up to your chest, etc., until your whole body is relaxed.

Of course, guided relaxation methods can help. As vividly as possible, imagine yourself at the beach, in the mountains or country, or whatever is most soothing to you.

If you have annoying thoughts that run through your mind when you are trying to sleep, you might have to talk to a counselor or therapist about that. I suggest avoiding prescription sleeping pills unless nothing else helps.

There are herbs that might help you to sleep, eg, valerian root, kava kava, chamomile, hops, passion flower, skullcap. Probably, valerian root and kava kava are the best. However, what most people don’t realize is that it can take at least a few weeks for some herbs to build up in your system before they start to work.

The minerals calcium and magnesium might be helpful for sleep. You can also try 5-HTP or melatonin. I would not take melatonin for over a month unless your doctor says it is ok.

I am a very bad sleeper. I’m always waking up, going to the bathroom, tossing and turning, and I rarely get a full night’s sleep.

I’m getting a little tired of spending money on pills that don’t seem to work.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a natural remedy, or some other effective method that would help me sleep better?

Thank you!
Edit - I’d also like to add that I invested in a very nice mattress, new pillows, and that doesn’t seem to help.

You don’t say why you can’t sleep, but for most people it’s because they can’t switch off, and stop thoughts racing around inside their head. If that’s the case, I have a couple of remedies that might sound a bit silly, but they work a treat for me.

The first is the thought chest. You imagine a big chest (no, not that kind :D - like a pirate’s chest). You grab all the thoughts that are racing about in your head (I imagine them as bits of paper flying around) and you stuff them into the chest, slam the lid shut with a satisfying thud and lock it. OK, now you can think any other thoughts except the ones you have put into the chest.
It takes a bit of mental discipline, but it’s surprisingly easy. If any of those thoughts creep out, grab them and stuff them back in there.

The second one works for worries about work and finances that keep a lot of us awake. You imagine work, or your bank account, or whatever, is a computer game, and you have hit the pause button. There is a big red PAUSE on the screen. Nothing is happening, and nothing is going to happen, so you can walk away and leave it until the morning.
It also helps to ask yourself - Is my bank manager / boss / accountant / teacher lying awake planning what they are going to say to me tomorrow? No, they are not, they are sleeping soundly, so that’s what I’m going to do!

I also find hot chocolate with a considerable amount of rum works quite well, and it goes quite well with the pirate’s chest!

I work over night as security over night. I usually get home about 9am. By this time I am really tired. My problem is I cannot sleep long 3-4 hours max. I need help but don’t want to rely on medicine to make me go to sleep but a healthier natural sleep aide.

You should be given a golden girl to sleep with you.

I gyming everyday, i’m writing exams practically everyday and i’m studying for hours. Yes I do occasionally wtch TV during my breaks, but gosh i’m like wide a wake at this time and I normally go to bed at this time. Help me please, I’m actually going for a bath now, hope that will work.

Also it’s vita; that I have good night sleep tonight, I have a huge major exam tomorrow and boy i’m stressing.

This isn’t natural but it works. Take a Benadryl or a pm pill. You can also try Melatonin. It is made naturally by the body so taking it will just add extra melatonin to your system. Eating Turkey or chicken (especially turkey) has a natural sleep aid in it. Why do you think everyone gets so sleepy after a Thanksgiving meal. No Caffeine or chocolate for several hours before bedtime (at least 6-8 for me or I’m up all night). Warm milk is good as is camomile tea but the best is a Benadryl.

My son is 14 years old, and cannot get to sleep at a reasonable time, which makes him very tired and unable to get out of bed for school in the morning, without me dragging him by his two feet! Are there any "home remedies" that someone can suggest? Thanks!

An hour before bedtime he needs to drink a full glass of milk, and also swallow a calcium/magnesium tablet or capsule. Works for me !

i am trying to go to bed at 9pm now to get used to it for school. i don’t have caffeine (chocolate, coke.etc) after 3pm and go out running for 30-45mins a day. i am a 12 year old girl by the way. can i please have some natural home remedies to go to sleep? and i am really tired right now but if i have a nap i wont be able to sleep at 9pm tonight so what are some natural home remedies that i can use to stay away for about 3 hours or so.no rude comments, thanks.

i always find lavender oil is great for helping me to sleep if you have a radiator in your room (and its at least warm) a couple of drops on the rad puts a lovely scent around the room or even a couple of drops on your pillowcase or a tissue it really helps to relax and help you drift off in a nice relaxed sleep or in a warm bath or shower (also good for headaches, pimples and it’s one of the oils that can be applied neat to the skin) happy zzzzzzzzzzz’s

I haven’t had any trouble sleeping until recently, and would rather not go see the doctor about it yet, because all I know they’ll do is give me a ’sleep hygiene’ handout and no real advise. And I don’t want them to prescribe a sleep aid. I tried taking a Tylenol pm to see if it helped. I slept alright, but I felt horrible when I woke up!

What are some natural sleep remedies? I ordered today some loose organic chamomile and lavender, and I intend to mix them and make an herbal tea that I hope will help with sleep. Would perhaps mixing a little bit of organic Valerian in the mix help too? I heard it doesn’t make a good tea, very strong and unpleasant. But maybe only a little bit would add benefits, but still taste of more pleasant herbs.

I make sure to not do anything like read or whatnot in my bed, it is just for sleeping. I always leave time for at least 8 and a half hours of sleep in my schedule, and at the same time every night. I workout every morning (have to, Army ROTC, haha!). I get my homework and studying out of the way before sleep time, so I am not dwelling on it. So I’ve tried most of the sleep hygiene tips I can find, but alas, they aren’t doing much good. I have some nice, soothing music, and that helps a little bit.

Any tips will be much appreciated. I just want to a full night’s sleep so I can feel rested. I hate having to go running, and then go to class feeling exhausted.

If you have annoying thoughts or personal issues that run thru your mind when you are trying to sleep, you might have to deal with those issues first. You might want to talk to a counselor or therapist about that. I suggest avoiding prescription sleeping pills unless nothing else helps.

You can also try 5-HTP, trytophan, GABA or melatonin (2-3 mg). I would not take melatonin for over a month unless your doctor says it is ok. It is a hormone produced by the pineal gland. If you take too much, your pineal gland might get "lazy" and produce less melatonin naturally.
