You’ve likely seen the popular TV ad campaign for Rozerem… the insomnia guy who keeps late-night company with Abe Lincoln, a beaver, and other colorful characters from his dreams?

Insomnia is such a common problem (one in three adults report having some type of insomnia) that sleep aids such as Rozerem are more popular than ever.

In this article, we’ll look at the different types of insomnia, self help treatments you can try, and Rozerem as a sleep aid for the treatment of insomnia.

What Causes Insomnia

Insomnia happens when your sleep-wake cycle, or your internal clock, is disrupted. It can be caused by many factors: stress, illness, pain, jet lag, sleep apnea, excessive physical or emotional arousal, shift work, a sedentary lifestyle, worrying about sleep, depression, and other factors.

Certain types of drugs can cause or worsen your insomnia:

* Antidepressants

* Antihypertensives

* Antiarrhythmics

* Antibiotics

* Antihistamines

* Antivirals

* Bronchodilators

* Central nervous system stimulants

* Corticosteroids

* Decongestants

* Diuretics

* Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)

Insomnia is more common in people over age 60 and especially in women over 40. It’s estimated that up to one third of the population suffers from some type of insomnia.

Types of Insomnia

Insomnia presents itself in a variety of different ways… once-in-a-while insomnia, chronic insomnia, insomnia that keeps you from falling asleep, insomnia that wakes you up frequently during the night, insomnia that wakes you up too early, and insomnia that allows you to sleep, but poorly.

There are three main types of insomnia:

1. Transient Insomnia: This is short-term insomnia that typically lasts from a few nights to a few weeks. Transient insomnia may cause next-day sleepiness, mood changes, and performance impairment.

2. Intermittent Insomnia: This is when you have periods of transient insomnia that occur on and off over months or years. It can lead to chronic insomnia.

3. Chronic Insomnia: This is long term insomnia – difficulty sleeping for more than a month. Chronic insomnia is often related to more serious problems like depression, memory impairment, accidents, missed work, and increased visits to the doctor.

Self Help for Insomnia

* Open the bedroom windows if possible. Fresh air may help you sleep.

* Don’t read or watch TV in bed… reserve the bed for sleep so the mind begins to associate lying down with sleeping

* Keep a tight schedule going to bed and waking up at the same time each day.

* Avoid daytime naps so you’re more tired at bedtime.

* Don’t eat heavy meals before going to bed. Avoid caffeine, alcohol and tobacco.

* Exercise, even 15 minutes a day, can help you relax and get a better sleep.

* Warm milk before bed really works because it causes a chemical reaction that increases serotonin in the brain, making you feel relaxed and calm.

If self help doesn’t improve your insomnia, it may be time to discuss sleep aids with your doctor.

I am not sure if this change in my eyes is due to recurring insomnia or just due to genetics (when I sleep well my eyes tend to be larger like my mother’s and when I don’t they tend to be smaller like my father’s). Sometimes these changes happen regardless of sleep. Any clues?

Lol, I know they say sleep when baby sleeps, but I have insomnia and can’t fall asleep in under an hour. My boyfriend’s going to school full time, it’s a 40 min commute at 7 am, so I have to do the night time feedings as well as the mornings and afternoon. He also gets impatient with her after a while because she doesn’t just want changed or to eat anymore, she wants attention and to play. She’s 6 weeks old and needs the stimulation, but he doesn’t get that yet. So how do I cope w/ lack of sleep? I can’t sleep in the evenings because that’s when I have to do laundry and cook and clean. Did I mention that we’re in the process of moving? And that he wants me to find a job? Lol, I must be getting a bit cranky :D Or does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do to fall asleep fast but not stay asleep if the baby wakes up? Thanks!

It’s hard to choose a best answer when there are two good answers, so thank you very much to both of you.

I’ve always had trouble sleeping my whole life, but now I fall asleep at like 8 in the morning. And Sometimes (more then i would like to) I don’t sleep AT ALL. I stay up for two days, and I think that I’m going to have a nice early sleep that night, but i still stay up till like 6 or 7. Is that insomnia and should I get some prescribed sleeping pills? I can’t deal with this anymore, even when I’m realy tired I can’t sleep.

I came down with a particularly nasty strain of the flu that landed me in the hospital with my throat swollen shut. The doctor put me on Tamiflu 3 days ago…. and I haven’t been able to sleep since. Every time I try to lie down, my mind suddenly starts racing and I can’t sleep. I know that insomnia is one of the side effects…. is there a way to counter it? Has anyone ever taken it and dealt with the same problem?

Okay well, I think I might have insomnia problems? I am 14 female, I usually can’t fall asleep for around 4-5 hours even if I am tired and the room is silent. Also, I NEVER feel refreshed after sleeping (even if it’s for over 8 hours). I often have other problems too like OCD and I have many fears/phobias which also keep me awake. I do have some stress and lately have been feeling kind of depressed.

Please help!
