What are some of the psychological reasons why one person suffering depression might sleep constantly and another experience acute insomnia?

I cant say for sure, but the first thought that came to mind is that everyones body chemistry is different and that may be why.

Personally, I went thru years of insomnia until I found Ambien. Thank the good Lord for Ambien.

It’s 2a.m on a school night. And I’ve been tossing and turning since 12. Even though I cut the lawn today, I’m wide awake. I just got over a different case of insomnia. (I didn’t sleep for over thirty hours). So I have no idea why I can’t sleep.

Any ideas on how to cure insomnia? I can’t stand warm milk, but besides that I’m up for pretty much anything.
[Male, 16 years old. Don’t know if that makes a difference or not.

Thanks!
I don't have any medication on hand. Wish I did though. lol

Some prevention tips:
- Try to go to sleep at the same time each night and get up at the same time each morning.
- Try not to take naps during the day because naps may make you less sleepy at night.
- Avoid caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol late in the day. Caffeine and nicotine are stimulants and can keep you from falling asleep. Alcohol can cause waking in the night and interferes with sleep quality.
- Get regular exercise. Try not to exercise close to bedtime because it may stimulate you and make it hard to fall asleep. Experts suggest not exercising for at least three to four hours before the time you go to sleep.
- Don’t eat a heavy meal late in the day. A light snack before bedtime, however, may help you sleep.
- Make your bedroom comfortable. Be sure that it is dark, quiet, and not too warm or too cold. If light is a problem, try a sleeping mask. If noise is a problem, try earplugs, a fan, or a “white noise” machine to cover up the sounds.
- Follow a routine to help you relax before sleep. Read a book, listen to music, or take a bath.
- Avoid using your bed for anything other than sleep or sex.

Some treatment options/ideas:
- If you can’t fall asleep and don’t feel drowsy, get up and read or do something that is not overly stimulating until you feel sleepy.

- If you find yourself lying awake worrying about things, try making a to-do list before you go to bed. This may help you to not focus on those worries overnight.

- Try your own variation of “counting sheep”. Engage your mind in something unimportant like spelling or counting backwards can help you relax. The secret is to numb your brain by making it perform a dull, boring task.

- Most of us don’t breathe as deeply as we should. When we breathe deeply and fully, involving not only the chest, but also the belly, lower back, and ribcage, it can actually help our parasympathetic nervous system, which controls relaxation. Close your eyes, and try taking deep, slow breaths, making each breath even deeper than the last. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. You can try making each exhale a little longer than each inhale.

- Progressive muscle relaxation is easy to do. Lie down or make yourself comfortable. Starting at your toes, tense all the muscles as tightly as you can. Then, after tensing, completely relax your muscles. Continue to do this for every muscle group in your body, working your way up from your feet to the top of your head.

- Close your eyes and imagine a place or activity that is calming and peaceful for you. It could be a beach of warm sand, or your childhood bedroom, or the image of yourself golfing or horseback riding. Concentrate on how relaxed this place or activity makes you feel, and “remain” in this imaginary place until you can completely wind down from your day.

I’m 14 and i cant really sleep. I lay in my bed and try and think about what is going on in my life where its making me not be able to sleep. does anyone have ANY suggestions?

Try melisa tea or chamomile tea. Melisa is an herb. It is sold in tea bags for two to five dollars for 20 tea bags in a Polish delicatessen in the tea section. If one brewed tea bag does not put you to sleep, try two tea bags. Also, you might want to exercise that usually gets people tired, but do not exercise in the evening.

If you are worried about your life and where you are heading, you might want to ask yourself if you have reason to loose sleep over it.

Has anyone found anything that works really well for insomnia? Not necessarily being unable to fall asleep, but being unable to STAY asleep, and waking up every hour?

Any help very much appreciated.

Try a glass of milk before bed. There are some herbal teas on the market one is bedtime tea by Celestial Seasons (I think I got that name right). They make one for stress and anxiety, I can't remember the name but the same company makes it.

Here lately it doesn't seem to matter what time I goto bed I wake up somewhere between 1-3am. Like earlier I fell asleep between 11-11:30 and was awake again by 1am. Does anyone have a drug free remedy that will help me sleep soundly during the nite. I usually end up falling asleep again around 5-6 am. But this is really wearing me out. Im not sleeping straight through the nite and when I wake up im up for a while.

sleepy time tea works well with a nice warm bath.
don't eat anything for a couple hours before you're ready to sleep.

Foods rich in Tryptophan will help induce natural sleep and aid in reducing anxiety and tension.

Avoid caffeine for a few hours before bedtime too.

foods rich in Tryptophan are ~ bananas, cottage cheese, milk, meat, fish, turkey, bananas, dried dates, peanuts and all protein rich foods …………. turkey sandwiches for supper may just do the trick buddy……… :0)

Have a soothing cup of organic loose leaf chamomile tea ~ this could be the sleep remedy you need too♥

The tea bag and commercial varieties of herbal teas such as chamomile tea could never be of any therapeutic value as they have had so much of the essential oils pulverised from them ………. only organic will do buddy ♥

Also, try putting a few drops of pure essential lavender oil into a warm bath and soak in that for 15 minutes just before bedtime ~ the lavender oil is a great natural stress reliever and will relax you enormously ♥

For more difficult insomnia, try 1mg of melatonin sublingually (dissolved under the tongue) 15 minutes before bedtime♥any good health food store will be able to provide you with all these things♥

Naturally resolving the problem will always be the best way …. :0)

hope this helps you a bit ♥

cheers

I've been taking generic Benadryl, but it seems to extend drowsiness even after I've slept at least 8 hours. I want something that won't make me feel groggy the next day.
This has just started over the summer, and it's driving me crazy.

Insomnia (sleeplessness) is due to stress,
dietary and medical problems. By making
small lifestyle changes like having a fixed
daily routine, relaxing and eating properly,
insomnia can be cured. I found the information
at http://www.nosleep.in/insomniacause.html
